WHAT’S ON LAKE MAC: Your guide to June events in Lake Macquarie

Live jazz inside the home of William Dobell, a rainbow flotilla, art workshops and a glam rock non-stop circus Bowie party. It’s all happening in Lake Macquarie this June.

We’ve partnered with Lake Mac Council once again this month to bring you all the highlights from an action-packed month.

Major Events

FLOAT YOUR BOAT 2022

Held on our beautiful Lake Macquarie, spectators of Float Your Boat 2022 will line the shores to watch boats in a rainbow of colour cruise past before casting their vote for the Newcastle Permanent People’s Choice Award. This event is part of the Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival.

LAKE MAC OPEN STUDIOS

Over Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June 2022, local artists and makers will open their studio doors and welcome the general public inside for a behind-the-scenes look; giving art lovers the chance to meet artists, learn about the creative process and purchase unique artworks to take home.

LAKE MACQUARIE DOBELL FESTIVAL 2022

The Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival is an annual month-long celebration of the life and work of esteemed artist Sir William Dobell; known for his passion, innovation, fringe, experimentation and creative excellence. The festival includes a number of events, workshops, courses and exhibitions occurring in various venues across the lake.

9 SQUADRON RATHMINES EXHIBITION

Join us in remembering the 9 Squadron plane and all its crew who were lost with HMAS Sydney in November 1941 eighty years after their service and sacrifice at the original Rathmines Heritage Centre exhibition. Gold coin entry.

ONE FOOT ON THE GROUND, ONE FOOT IN THE WATER

This exhibition presents paintings, sculptures, installations and sound works, that challenge us to reckon with death and dying as an inherent part of life, invoking experiences of loss, impermanence, transience, remembrance, memorialisation and varied expressions of grief. Free admission.

MUSIC IN THE PODIUM

Catch a family-friendly concert at Music in the Podium, every Friday evening by the lake at Warners Bay.

JAMES DRINKWATER IN CONVERSATION

Join us for an evening in conversation with celebrated Hunter-based artist James Drinkwater as he discusses the inspiration behind his ballet Storm Approaching Wanji and other desires, which will be performed at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima in November this year. Book now to join us as we delve into the rich story and process behind Drinkwater’s latest creative work.

LIFE DRAWING AFTER HOURS WITH ARTIST SUE ROSALIND VESELY – 4 WEEK COURSE

Life Drawing after hours with Local artist Susan Vesely and a nude life model
What a great way to start the week! Learn to draw the human form, exploring gesture, contour and proportion with a life model and a glass of wine. $180 for a 4-week course on a Tuesday 6:00 pm-8:00 pm

OPEN STUDIOS JUNE 2022 WORKSHOPS

As part of Lake Mac Open Studios June 2022, Yarra Balba Studios will be running art workshops on Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 of June. Learn from talented local artists as they teach you a range of art practices, from watercolour to experimental drawing.

SUNDAY SESSIONS AT MAC

Grab a wine or beer, and enjoy some local music and artmaking. Tickets are $20 and cover a cheese platter, all art materials and live music. Drinks are available for purchase at the bar.

DOBELL FOR KIDS

Enjoy a range of art activities based on Dobell’s works, in the grounds of MAC. Kids and families can rotate between the activity stations, exploring ways to create landscapes, portraits and postcards! Activities designed for 6-14 year olds, with parental supervision. Bookings essential limited places.

JAZZ NIGHT AT DOBELL’S

Visit the home of William Dobell, enjoy a glass of wine, a touch a Jazz and learn more about one of Lake Mac’s most famous residents. Evening will include: Tour of Dobell House, Jazz Trio Performance, hands on Art inspired by Dobell, Wine and canapes. $30 per person includes drinks and canapes. Limited numbers, bookings essential.

REBEL: A DAVID BOWIE CIRCUS ROCK TRIBUTE

Rebel is a glittering glam rock non-stop circus Bowie party! Strut right up to the Multi-Arts Pavilion mima for a night of glittering glam rock, phenomenal acrobatics and a heart-stopping sideshow. NASHVILLE: A ROCK ODYSSEY

Hold on to your seat folks – it’s going to be a wild ride! The Majishans will present Nashville: a rock odyssey. This is the story of an almost famous Australian band whose ambitious manager scores them a breakthrough gig in Nashville, Tennessee. All they have to do is get on a private plane, taking off from a deserted airstrip at night, and all their dreams will come true… Tickets $25

FILM @ RATHMINES: FRIDA
