There is no doubt about it, Mother’s Day 2020 (fast approaching, folks – it will fall on Sunday, 10 May this year) will be very different from previous years. But we feel there has never been a better time to show the people around us that we love and appreciate them. Especially our Mums.
Maybe you are missing your Mum as you haven’t seen her since she’s been in self-isolation, she might be o/s or interstate and travelling is obviously off the cards at the moment. Perhaps your Mum (or your partner) has started to home-school and work from home too. Have you noticed she is a little bit stressed out atm?
Well, here are a few ideas, local to Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, to give you a head start and helping hand this Mother’s Day. Simple ways to both support small business and to say thank you to your Mum for all she does.
SOMETHING DELICIOUS TO SAVOUR
If you are looking for the whole kit and kaboodle, a delicious pack of savoury and sweet treats, these guys have you covered. Check out the MEET Date Night Deal and the Newcastle Food and Flower Markets Mother’s Day Box. Yum!
Is there anything sweeter than giving the gift of chocolate? Lovingly handcrafted in small batches right here in Newcastle, Cocoa Nib have all the goods. You can order on-line and they offer shipping and Newcastle-based delivery.
And then there are donuts. And gin. And of course wine. Got them all, right here: Doughheads, Coal & Cedar, Inner City Winemakers.
This is a tough time, we totally appreciate that, if these treats aren’t really possible at the moment don’t forget that it is always the thought that counts. How about a beautiful cup of tea or coffee and homemade pancakes for breakfast? You could serve them on a tray in bed with a flower picked from your garden (or a neighbours, they won’t mind). She would love it!
But do not, we repeat, do not forget to do the washing up after!
SOMETHING TO MAKE HER FEEL GOOD
Perhaps your Mum is on the hunt for something glamorous to wear? You know, for when she’s taking the bin out. Well, Ramjet have you covered.
Or maybe something offering the ultimate in quarantine comfort is more your Mum’s style? Look no further than Mortels and their super soft and fluffy slippers.
Here are a few other lovely local things your Mum may love – funky earrings, delivered courtesy of Blackbird Corner and hand made, best quality scrunchies from the three Newy sisters at Maroje.
We thought of something else that might make Mum feel good. Some time on her own, possibly in short supply now that everyone is home. All the time. Why not give your Mum time to have a bath, light a candle and relax – all by herself. Don’t have a tub? What if you set your Mum up a little picnic blanket and cushion in the backyard. And leave her out there undisturbed for a whole hour!
SOMETHING TO BRIGHTEN HER DAY
These COVID-19 days can be long and let’s face it, a little repetitive. Why not use Mother’s Day as an excuse to brighten someone’s day. Flowers, plants and some freshness will do it. Posy Post can absolutely help you out here.
Looking for something local, fun and colourful? The Mitch Revs Gallery on-line shop could be just the spot. Here you’ll find fine art prints, free-form stitch kits, accessories and links to other local artists too.
The chance to brighten your Mum’s day does not have to cost very much all. Why not get crafty? We all have a little more time on our hands – a hand made card, a little love letter, photo album or drawing would go down a Mother’s Day treat.
And you know what Mum’s really love – to be appreciated and feel loved in return so even just a simple phone call, Houseparty, Google Hangout or “I love you Mum” could do the trick.
