We love a good Spotify playlist here at Newcastle Live.
Our work-day is always augmented with the strains of Aussie Classic Hits, Friday Favourites, Funk and Soul Classics, or Throwback Thursday.
Well, recently after searching for a quality Newcastle playlist on the streaming service, we stumbled across an unmitigated gem. A tune that espouses the benefits and joys of living in Newcastle in this silliest of ways.
The song in question (check it out below, you won’t be disappointed) is called Newcastle Is A Nice City In New South Wales Yeah Yeah and was written by an artist calling himself The Guy Who Sings Songs About Cities and Towns.
“Right across the harbour from Stockton, you’ll find a wonderful land,” the piano ballad declares before namechecking various Novo landmarks including Newcastle Beach, the Uni and Hunter Street.
The tune can be found on the record These Australian Places Deserve Nice Songs which features no less than 43 tracks about Aussie towns and cities including an absolute banger about Maitland!
Seems a bit weird, right?
Well, things get a bit weirder when you realise that the artist himself is a guy from the US by the name of Matt Farley who has never even been to Newcastle.
Matt, who runs the website Motern Media, has written an astonishing 20,000 across more than 70 aliases including Papa Razzi And The Photogs, The Very Nice Interesting Singer Man, The Toilet Bowl Cleaners, The Passionate & Objective Jokerfan, and The Singing Animal Lover.
While this might sound like a guy with waaaaaay too much time on his hands, Matt’s quest is to write a song on every possible search topic conceivable, – everything from how good Terrigal is to film critic Roger Ebert.
He’s not doing too bad out of all of this silliness, either with Substream magazine reporting in 2018 that Matt rakes in around $60,000 a year doing so.
Not bad at all.
