Newcastle foodies rejoice. Fine-dining, local fresh-produce driven favourite Flotilla is reopening. Here’s everything we discovered on our very first visit…

We at Newcastle Live were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the menu at the new restaurant kid on the Wickham block, Flotilla this week.

The brainchild of Chris Joannou and Zach Scholtz, the team behind The Edwards, Flotilla promises an intimate bar and restaurant experience with an emphasis on quality Australian produce, and our experience definitely lived up to that promise.

The venue itself is definitely intimate with a table set-up that invites a very communal dining feel and walking in, you are welcomed with the sight of an open kitchen with the inviting aromas wafting across the room.

Sitting down, we were presented with a sample menu that was essentially a ‘greatest hits’ of the wider fare that will be launched to the public on Friday.

An entree of butter poached king prawn with sweet corn, cucumber, sunflower and green onion was an absolute delight while a main of Northern NSW waygu sirloin with burnt celeriac and young carrot, was cooked to perfection and full of flavour.

Perhaps the highlight of the night, aside from the banana-infused bourbon cocktails that our knowledgeable server recommended, was the desert.

A chocolate mousse with a whipped coconut, rhubarb caramel and cocoa nibs was one of the finest examples of the dessert classic this writer has ever tasted.

If you are looking for an experience that perfectly balances refined dining with a relaxed, casual atmosphere, Flotilla should be on your “to try” list.

Further, the venue’s outdoor seating options make the ideal spot to enjoy the ever-evolving wine list or a cheeky cocktail.

Flotilla is located at 8 Albert Street, Wickham.
