There’s no denying that, when it comes to dumplings, Newcastle definitely has the taste for those moreish little morsels.
From watching those super-talented chefs churn out dumplings at fantastic speed to the sensory explosion upon biting into a perfectly made Xiao Long Bao, when done right, dumplings are more than just a meal – they are an event.
In that spirit, we took to Facebook recently to ask where to get the best dumplings in our part of the world and you definitely weren’t backward in coming forward telling us your fave dumpling haunts.
Sukimama is somewhat of an anomaly as it does not exist as a bricks and mortar eatery. Rather it is a catering company that also offers cooking classes and you might even see owner Suki Kwon setting up pop-up shops at events around town (so make sure you follow their socials to stay in the know)
There was a heck of a lot of love for the Sukimama dumplings on or poll and while we haven’t tried them here at Newcastle Live, we did get to sample her gorgeous Korean flavours at the recent Sukimama X The Kiosk collab and all we can say is WOW.
52 Cleary Street, Hamilton
Being a Hamilton native, and an unabashed fan of the dumpling, this cute little Cleary Street eatery has been on the top of this writer’s culinary calendar for some time.
While I will go for the spring onion pancakes (some of the best ever tasted), I inevitably stay for their hefty selection of perfectly cooked dumplings.
High on the agenda are always the pork and prawn dumplings in red chili oil, the pork Xiao Long Bao and the simple yet bursting with flavour chicken and celery dumplings.
47 Beaumont Street, Hamilton
This relatively new kid on the Beaumont Street block has been making quite a name for itself amoung local gourmands for its authentic Sichuan cuisine and deliciously moreish dumplings.
These guys have got more dumpling and wonton options than you can poke a (chop)stick at and, with am almost fetishistic fascination with freshness, you know these little guys are going to satisfy!
Pro tip: The boiled chicken an mushroom dumplings are next level!
Charlestown Square – 30 Parson Street, Charlestown
This Charlestown Square gem has been schlepping dumplings before they were ‘cool’ and thus have them down to a fine art.
The kitchen can churn these bad boys out at a rate of knots, making it the perfect choice if you are in a hurry.
Also, New Shanghai offers some of the best examples of Xiao Long Bao this writer has ever tasted – especially their signature crab meat and port variety.
Franky’s Lan Zhou Noodles
87 Young Street, Carrington
Not having ventured over to Carrodise for a dumpling excursion as yet, we are hearing lots of chatter about Franky’s Lan Zhou Noodles.
And it’s all good!
Apparently the dumplings coming out of this kitchen will change your life. So, if you are unhappy with where you are at this point in your ‘journey’ maybe you need to sample some of Franky’s delicious vegetable dumplings or its tofu, Wombok, mushroom and rice noodle variety.
