There’s no denying that Newcastle loves itself a bit of fried chook.
The fact that global chicken behemoth KFC chose our part of the world for its first-ever drive-thru only store serves to remind us that we are a global hotspot for the consumption of yardbird.
We were keen to discover the hottest hotspots for a fried chicken fix and you certainly weren’t backward in coming forward in voicing your opinions. So, here are four of the best – as voted by you!
139 Maitland Road, Islington
The love displayed for this eatery, located at the Newcastle Hotel was staggering, but perhaps not surprising for anyone who has sampled the perfectly cooked chook coming out of this kitchen.
Launching mid-2019, these guys have obviously been making quite a name for themselves on the Newy food scene thanks to an all-killer-no-filler menu that isn’t afraid to bring the heat when necessary.
One eager fan certainly wasn’t afraid to sing that love from the rooftops, commenting: “It changed my life. It touched me.”
51 Belford Street, Broadmeadow
Coming a close second in our fried chook poll, Chicken Brothers serve up deliciously crispy yet oh-so-tender morsels with a decidedly Asian bent.
Capitalising on the ever-increasing popularity of Korean flavours, Chicken Brothers is all about beautifully cooked chicken coated with gloriously sticky sauce.
Pro tip: Add a side of pickled radish to proceedings to really see your meal sing! Yum.
The Corner @ Charlestown Square/ 1-266 King Street
While perhaps better known for their weird and wonderful weekly burger specials, this popular Newcastle (and now Charlestown spot) runs a pretty good game when it comes to fried chicken, too.
In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better example of chicken and waffles in this part of the world and it was their chicken burger – The McFly that made this writer fall in love with Racal.
Not only because I am a huge Back To The Future fan, but also the deceptively simple combination of southern fried chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and ranch sauce is a match made in Heaven.
Shout out to the old school! This somewhat surprising entry is a no-foolin’ Hunter Valley institution – giving Novocastrian chicken fanciers what they want since 1968.
While they may be eclipsed in ‘fanciness’ by other entries, Henny Penny has definitely become part of the cultural fabric of Newcastle thanks in no small part to being the foundation official sponsor of the Newcastle Knights.
Oh, and their BBQ chook and fry pieces are pretty good, too.
