Well, the votes have been cast and reeled in. And, according to aficionados of the iconic takeaway dish, New Lambton is the place to go for the best fish and chips in Newcastle.
Andy’s Take Away Food, that long-standing eatery on Alma Road took out top honours amid some pretty stiff competition.
We went to the unassuming, old school takeaway to see what all the fuss was about and after snagging ourselves an order of fish and chips (which came in a hot minute, despite there being more than a few hungry diners waiting in anticipation on the footpath), we’ve gotta say that fuss was warranted.
The chips were golden, fluffy, plentiful, and not overly salted while the perfectly cooked fish had us hooked from the first bite.
This is traditional, no frills fish and chips done right.
Running a close second in the poll was The Kingfish and we, having spent a few harbourside long-lunches at this Honeysuckle-based restaurant, can definitely attest to the quality of fish and chips coming out of this kitchen.
The top-five was rounded out by the recently-opened Vinny’s Takeaway in Georgetown, Harbourside Takeaway in Wickham (the crumbed fish these guys serve up is absolutely next level) and Scottie’s Seafood and Bar in Newcastle East.
So there, you have it. There are certainly no shortage of options when it comes to fish and chips in this part of the world, but according to you, these are the five spots whose fish is fine and whose chips you definitely don’t want to be throwing to the seagulls.
