There’s no denying that there is something truly fun about proving your ‘brainboxness’ with a couple of mates over a few ales at the local watering hole.
With the amount of pub trivia that exists in Newcastle and surrounds, it’s pretty safe to assume that the appetite for answering questions is strong amoung the big brains of the city.

1. Imperial Hotel, Maitland

The former manager of the Grand Junction Hotel, ex-journo political hopeful and all-around raconteur, Maitland identity Ben Quinn has recently added quizmaster to his cap, running the weekly trivia night at The Imperial Hotel and it seems his unique brand of ‘wordsmithery’ is capturing the imagination of Maitland ‘Poindexters’.
One faithful shared their love for Imperial Trivia on our post thusly: ‘it’s got more variety than the lineup @ Maitland Courthouse on a Monday morning with some of the Valleys premier axe men busting out a riff or two, moving pictures, sound bites & so much more, def worth checking out.”

2. Stag and Hunter Hotel
187 Maitland Rd, Mayfield
Entertainment journalist, author, and all-round culture geek Nick Milligan is the quizmaster for this popular weekly question fest and if music, movies, and TV are your bag, well this is one you definitely want to check out.
The trivia features a six-month competition in the first half of 2019 called The Genius League, where a team will win a coveted trophy. The second half of the year features The Guru League. Winning teams receive 3 points, runner-up gets 2 points and third gets one point.

3. Crown and Anchor
189 Hunter St, Newcastle
Newcastle’s Crown and Anchor was also shown a fair bit of love for their weekly trivia night.
Aside from an eclectic and challenging range of questions, entry is totally free and you can even grab a $10 schnitty as you try to tackle the trickiest headscratchers.
Also, if you stick around after trivia you can take advantage of some great drink specials until close.

4. The Boat Shed Bar (Belmont 16s)
The Parade, Belmont
The Boatshed Bar at Belmont 16s is also not adverse to putting your knowledge to the test with their weekly trivia night.
While we haven’t checked it out for ourselves yet, you guys and gals reckon the questions and atmosphere are pretty on the money.
Oh and you can also grab a burger for eight bucks as you mull over your answers!

5. Clarendon Hotel
Another venue that marries questions with schnitzels perfectly, The Clarendon’s trivia night is run by Quizmasters Trivia.
It’s free to play, either in the front bar or restaurant, and there are over $100 in bar vouchers to be won.
Team registrations start at 7.30pm. Restaurant bookings are not required but highly recommended for big groups.
