There’s little denying that the humble hot chip is pretty high on the list of Australian staples.
This fact is evidenced by the sheer amount of ‘chipperies’ that exist in our part of the world, and also by the sheer volume of chatter generated on Facebook when we asked you, last week, where to get the crispiest, goldenest, and downright delicious chips in Newcastle and beyond.
The competition was stiff, too with more than 25 outlets mentioned by hungry readers.
Without further ado, the winner of this hotly contested poll is…
1. Mayfield West Kebabs and Charcoal Chicken
402 Maitland Road, Mayfield West
You were all quite adamant about your favourite local chip haunts, but none moreso than fans of this little eatery on Maitland Road in Mayfield West.
After dropping in to sample some of the hand-cut goodness, we would have to agree. Piping hot, old-school style, chips wrapped in paper like the good old days. There is a lot to love about these crunchy morsels so a repeat visit is definitely on the agenda. Oh and we’ve also heard they do a pretty mean HSP, but that’s another story.

1/51 Beaumont Street, Hamilton
Another purveyor of kebabs giving the chip some love is this Beaumont Street icon.
Cappadocia has been serving up flavour filled kebabs fr more years than we can remember, but it seems their take on the chip is giving the late-night favourite a run for its money.
Aside from the piping hot freshness that literally wafts out of the chip carton, the thing that really impresses here is the speed of service. On out last visit, our chip order was ready before the wallet went back in the pocket.

3. Kahibah Hilltop Takeaway
51 Hexham Street, Kahibah
It seems that you Lake Macquarie-ites are just as fond of the chip as Novocastrians and the best place to grab a serve in the area, according to you, is this humble little green building in Kahibah.
While unassuming from the outside, the quality being pushed out of this kitchen is nothing to be sneezed at. Showing the love by hand-cutting their potatoes, if you are looking for a fast food fix in Lake Mac, word on the street is that you should make like a seagull and head for Kahibah.

4. The Ritz Cafe
266 Brunker Road, Adamstown
While we have yet to sample the chips at this Brunker Road establishment, that is something we’re keen to rectify.
Again, it is the love put into these little fried pieces of joy that sets it apart from the pack – a fact summed up by one eager fan who took to their Facebook page to declare: “The best fresh cut real Chips, not dodgy frozen ones. Great service and friendly people too.”

Big Bertha’s Takeaway
1 Beresford Avenue, Beresfield
Another spot we at Newcastle Live has yet to try (in fact we were unaware of its existence until you told us).
These guys, who promise a “traditional chip” came in at equal fourth with The Ritz Cafe.
Visitors to their social media pages have uttered the likes of “110% best fish and chip shop around everything was cooked to perfection,” “best chips in the area! Yum,” and “best home made style chips”. With those kind of reviews it’s pretty obvious that Big Bertha’s is at least worth a visit.

To salt or not to salt?
We also asked Hunter chipophiles how they liked to “dress” their chippies and at seems that the incomparable chicken salt won the day as the preferred topping.
