Newcastle may have been overlooked for a 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup match but the City of Newcastle Council hopes to win over two-time defending champions the United States when they play the Matildas at McDonald Jones Stadium on 30 November.
Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz told Newcastle Live Radio that the venue and the city have established a love affair with the Matildas and Newcastle products Emily van Egmond and Clare Wheeler are likely to be on show during the match.
The city has established a love affair with the Matildas, with a crowd of 16,829 in 2017 which was, at the time, the biggest home crowd for a Matildas game outside of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
