UPSTAGE: City of Newcastle invest in local theatre as part of new program

City of Newcastle and Civic Theatre will invest in local theatre productions as part of the brand-new UpStage program at The Playhouse.

Up to four productions will receive marketing support and technical assistance alongside their two-week placement in the 195-seat venue.

The program comes after a successful pilot phase in 2022 with local theatre company Tantrum Youth Arts and their production of Good Mourning.

“We are excited to deliver Good Mourning as part of Upstage at The Playhouse and the opportunity for early career artists to work alongside industry professionals, on such an important platform,” Tantrum Creative Director Penelope Kentish said.

“To have the support and investment from Civic Theatre in new Australian work is paramount for the early career artists we work with, to build and sustain their careers in Newcastle and have local audiences share in their stories.”

Productions are selected for the UpStage program will take to the stage in March 2024.
