Get ready to step back in time this weekend as Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest rolls into Maitland for two huge days of steam-powered fun.
The beloved event is a highlight of the Hunter’s cultural calendar, celebrating the region’s rich industrial heritage with an action-packed program that draws train buffs, history lovers, and curious families alike.
This year, locomotives 3265 and 3526 will be chugging across the Hunter, offering passengers a rare chance to ride in style aboard restored carriages from a bygone era.
Sunday’s program features the ARTC Great Train Race — a crowd favourite that pits two steam engines against each other in a thrilling test of speed and stamina.
For those after an evening experience, Steamfest After Dark is not to be missed. From twilight on Saturday, Maitland Station will transform into a buzzing festival hub, complete with carnival rides, food trucks, live music, and the stunning sight of locomotive 3265 lit up on the station platform.
The Altapac Show ‘n’ Shine is another major drawcard, showcasing more than 500 classic cars across the weekend. With live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and plenty of shiny chrome to admire, it’s a feast for car lovers and a great excuse to spend the day in the sun.
Adding even more vintage charm is the Bloomfield Group Steam Rally, where antique machinery from across Australia will be on display.
The Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest 2025 is happening this weekend on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 April. For the full program and train schedules, head to steamfest.com.au and plan your weekend adventure.
