Top 5 places to get a pie now we’ve said goodbye to Darby’s

Laura’s top 5 places to soak up the best the pastry in town. (With extra sauce obviously).

Early last week the news finally broke. A Newcastle institution aka Darby’s Pies, collapsed and crumbled in a sea of tears (ok they were all my tears). But… where are we meant to go now to get our delicious pie and pastry fix?!

Heatherbrae’s Pies

How could we write this list without including everyone’s favourite stop on the highway? You know the highway that you drive on whilst your mum and dad sing “we’re all going on a summer holiday” in unison smiling and singing and being delightful.

Address: Corner Pacific Hwy And Masonite Rd, Heatherbrae NSW 2324
Hit their website:

T&Ps Fire Station Shop

Every review I’ve read about this place says they’re the best pies in Newcastle. Other reviews state that they are a Newcastle institution. I’m sold so I guess you should be too.

Address: 31 Union St, Cooks Hill NSW 2300
See what people say on Trip Advisor:

That weird 24-hour store in the mall

Ok, hear me out here. When do you really want a pie? At 2 am obviously. So where can you get one? That weird 24-hour shop in the mall of course. They might be a little dodgy, they might be dangerously below room temperature but hey, so so worth it.

Address: Come on, you know where we’re talking about.
Google it:

New Lambton Hot Bread Shop

These are always the best kind of pies. The ones you least suspect. The family-run bakery you know, the one you can always turn to. For a pie, the pie, a local pie, head to the bread shop, obviously.

Address: 77 Regent St, New Lambton NSW 2305
Look at it:

Uni bakehouse

The uni bakehouse makes the list purely because of the sauce factor. That and the pies are cheap as bloody chips (or pies in this case). Uni students are some of the best pie judges around and the uni bakehouse is worth the trip to Callaghan.

Address: Shortland Building, 1, Callaghan NSW 2308

  1. My Baker at 122 Hunter St has the best pies in Newcastle currently, hands down! They have chicken asparagus, satay chicken, butter chicken

I wouldn’t consider the 2am pie place anything more than a reflection of the poor a la carte choices in Hunter Street in general.

There is Papa Al’s Bakehouse at 233 Hunter Street however for such a large looking bakery, they do not stock chicken pies as initially advertised then removed and the mother always tries to pick a fight when I ask for said pie.

For those in the know, there was a phantasmagorical pie shop formerly located at the west end where the Bao Brothers dark kitchen now is. They had the most eye popping selection of pies I’d ever seen: crocodile and white wine, rabbit rosemary, roo kidney, gourmet chicken. R.I.P!!!! This seriously would have been the best thing at 2am popup on uni night or weekends, alas Newcastle can’t handle such youngblood.

  2. Wow, can’t believe that you would leave out Baker’s Cottage. Their pies are amazing and if you are up towards Maitland you can’t go past a Blakeneys pie either. Morpeth bakery also has a beef stroganoff that is to die for.

  3. Yep, I definitely second Micah’s call on Blakeneys Pies, they are quality. I was surprised to see them not make the list. Pies To The Max at Maryville is also a new favourite of mine. Their pies are big and full of chunks of meat. Quality stuff.
