Early last week the news finally broke. A Newcastle institution aka Darby’s Pies, collapsed and crumbled in a sea of tears (ok they were all my tears). But… where are we meant to go now to get our delicious pie and pastry fix?!
Heatherbrae’s Pies
How could we write this list without including everyone’s favourite stop on the highway? You know the highway that you drive on whilst your mum and dad sing “we’re all going on a summer holiday” in unison smiling and singing and being delightful.
Address: Corner Pacific Hwy And Masonite Rd, Heatherbrae NSW 2324

T&Ps Fire Station Shop
Every review I’ve read about this place says they’re the best pies in Newcastle. Other reviews state that they are a Newcastle institution. I’m sold so I guess you should be too.
Address: 31 Union St, Cooks Hill NSW 2300

That weird 24-hour store in the mall
Ok, hear me out here. When do you really want a pie? At 2 am obviously. So where can you get one? That weird 24-hour shop in the mall of course. They might be a little dodgy, they might be dangerously below room temperature but hey, so so worth it.
Address: Come on, you know where we’re talking about.

New Lambton Hot Bread Shop
These are always the best kind of pies. The ones you least suspect. The family-run bakery you know, the one you can always turn to. For a pie, the pie, a local pie, head to the bread shop, obviously.
Address: 77 Regent St, New Lambton NSW 2305

Uni bakehouse
The uni bakehouse makes the list purely because of the sauce factor. That and the pies are cheap as bloody chips (or pies in this case). Uni students are some of the best pie judges around and the uni bakehouse is worth the trip to Callaghan.
Address: Shortland Building, 1, Callaghan NSW 2308
