Ah January. New year new you right? The you that is so desperately trying to ignore the little voice in the back of your mind screaming TREAT YO SELF. Look I know 2018 is already a pretty weird year, (it is for me anyway I donโ€™t know about anyone else but Iโ€™m writing this so lets run with it hey), but the one thing I canโ€™t ignore, is that little voice. Another of that voiceโ€™s favourite sayings is โ€˜you deserve it,’ and โ€˜lifeโ€™s too short, eat dessert firstโ€™. These words and phrases are especially relevant when itโ€™s 40 flipping degrees outside and air conditioning is something that’s limited to the local pub and your parent’s house. So without further adieu, here are my top five places to get your mittens on a tasty treat to help you cool down this summer.

Jims Milk Bar – 79 Tudor St, Hamilton NSW 2303

I know many locals who have never ventured to Jimโ€™s Milk bar. Um hey hi guys, donโ€™t y’all like candy? Or ice cream? Or an array of things that make you and your inner child jump for joy? Jimโ€™s Milk bar has a long history in town and is sure to have something to make your day just that little bit brighter.

Hood Bar 188 Union St, The Junction NSW 2291

If youโ€™re looking for something a little extra *Spice up your life* but the Spice Girls plays in the background* and want to treat your sweet tooth exactly the way it deserves to be treated, head to Hood Bar in the Junction. From dessert tacos to dessert waffles (what?!), cakes, milkshakes (which are sure to bring anyone you want to the yard), theyโ€™ve got the lot, with sprinkles too, duh.

Popolo – King Street Newcastle

Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve driven past many times and seen the line snaking out the door. The tiny store packed with bodies all keen to get their delicious sugary fix. The best thing about Pololo though is they rotate their flavours all the time (that is unless youโ€™re like me, a weird old soul who will pick choc mint over anything any day). They are also super vegan friendly, and have #blessed gluten free cones available too. Winning.

Monella Darby Street Cooks Hill

The first time I walked in here, I thought it was a tattoo parlour. This is neither a bad or a good thing, it is however a gelato thing which makes it an amazing place regardless. Also, hot tip, this place is air-conditioned so if youโ€™re like me and live in a crappy pre war building with 40 ft ceilings just take your time picking the flavour and soak up those sweet sweet aircon vibes. They also have heaps of vegan and dairy free options available too.

7/11 – Literally everywhere

Iโ€™m always one to advocate for the small business. But ever since I watched that Simpsonโ€™s episode I canโ€™t go past a super slurpee. The best hangover cure in the entire world is a giant super slurpee hollowed out in the middle with just enough room for a full can of redbull. This will save your life, or at least your hangover and help you get through those first few hellish hours of death.
