Tom goes kite surfing in Newcastle

The Eagle Boys Happiness Fund is helping Challenge Tom in Tom Dow’s quest to raise awareness for charities like the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation in a fun and exciting way. Tom has Leigh Syndrome, a neurological disorder resulting in progressive loss of mental and movement abilities, and has decided to do whatever challenge the Internet raises enough funds for him to do. Last weekend, Tom went Kite Surfing in Newcastle.

Eagle Boys Mayfield aided fundraising by donating 20 pizzas, which were sold on the day with all funds going towards charities and to help Tom do more challenges.

Tom thinks this is a good way to raise awareness for charities and causes and he is excited for this weekend where he will be tandem kite surfing from Nobbys Beach to Merewether Beach.

Tom’s carer, Beynon Owen from Disability Support Services, says he’s motivated to help out with the cause because of the joy Tom gets out of it.

“Tom’s got a lot of soul and everyone who meets him gets on well with him,” Mr Owen said.

“He’s such a good and happy guy and this event is combining something that’s positive with a crazy achievement for somebody in his situation.”

“Tom has never done kite surfing and he will be travelling across a fair distance. With Tom never having done it, it’s something unknown so it’s even more of a challenge.”

The owner of the Eagle Boys Mayfield store, Neil McInnes, said the event was a great initiative and he was proud to be involved in fundraising efforts.

“Challenge Tom is such a unique approach to an issue that would usually get people down, but Tom’s really active about it so I knew I wanted to help out in some way,” Mr McInnes said.

The Eagle Boys Happiness Fund is a ‘helping hand’ program designed to assist any person or group within Eagle Boys store communities who needs assistance.
