Well, it’s that time of year again, folks. The pointy end.
The time where we start to reflect on the last 12 months while looking forward to the year ahead.
Well, in a nutshell, when it comes to quality original local music, Newcastle has proved, yet again in 2019, that it is one of the most fecund, eclectic and downright exciting ‘scenes’ in this wide brown land we call Australia.
To prove this point, we have created for your listening pleasure, a best of Newy 2019 playlist.
In curating this heady collection of local tracks, one thing that became quickly evident was the sheer amount of talent this town has to offer.
The playlist, clocking in at more than two and a half hours, features just one track from each artist.
Also, this was put together without the need for too much head-scratching, Google searching or scouring Triple J Unearthed to find the hottest young things.
From the sonic adventurism and lush ’70s soundscapes of Lachlan X Morris, the cruisy sophistication of Cooks and Bakers and the delicate meanderings of Brightness, to the fist-in-the-air street punk of Trashed Again, the tubthumping country of Hurricane Fall and the Viper Creek Band and the lo-fi looseness of Surf Trash – music in this town has never been in better shape!
And this is by no means an exhaustive list, either. we would love to see what Newy tunes floated your boat in 2019!.
So, as the sun starts to set another year in out fair city, we here at Newcastle Live just want to say a HUGE thank you to all the singers, bashers, twangers, ivory ticklers tooters and hooters that gave us such a memorable musical 2019.
If this year is anything to go by we CAN’T WAIT for 2020.
