The Song Cover Challenge 2018

Newcastle as a town and as a community is well known for its musical prowess. We have such a plethora of amazing original artists floating around the place that sometimes we can feel like we’re swimming at the deep end of the talent pool. But… what happens when these original artists aim their hearts, minds, and guitar strings at some of their favourite songs? Pure genius obviously. Thankfully, there’s a little thing called The Song Cover Challenge ready and waiting for original artists to do their best and show us all what they’ve got.

But wait, wot?

Let me break it down for you, the Song Cover Challenge is a hub and an online community where local musicians get together, throw their hat in the ring and cover song in the best way they know how.

Yeah, that sounds pretty easy like is it just any song?

Good question. No, it’s not just any song! That’s kind of the point behind the whole challenge part of the scenario. Songs are selected by other musicians and are subsequently assigned to fellow competitors.

Ok that sounds a little more like a challenge say more things

I’ll use an example. Josh Ballico aka Bofolk Ballico and his version of ‘You’re The One That I Want’ (yes the Grease song and made it his own. Instead of the cliché hip shakin’ leather clad version we all know, Josh turned it into a heartbreaking tale of man vs. vending machine. It’s bloody great and the guy knows how to edit a video. If you’re looking for a stellar example of the Song Cover Challenge at its best look no further than this little ditty.

But wait I don’t know how to edit a video or have a million hours to spend on making a masterpiece?

Hey you know what, that’s totally fine. Spencer Scott aka the real Mayor of Newcastle produced a stellar cover of ‘She’s Like The Wind’ by Patrick Swayze using a placeholder photo to sub in for the whole video clip element.

Can I enter and how do I vote?

This is currently the only SCC planned for 2018 : (

But thankfully you can see a plethora of amazing covers over on their Facebook page!

If you do want to get involved right now though, it’s time to pick a winner for the one-off 2018 challenge! Again head over to their Facebook Page (Song Cover Challenge) and have a geeze.
