Ahh, breakfast. It’s supposed to be the most important meal of the day and while we may have grown up on bowls of sugared Corn Flakes or humble plates of bacon and eggs, our palates have definitely matured when it comes to the morning repast, here in Newcastle.
From a ‘full English’ fry-up to health-conscious bowls filled with all manner of ‘superfoods’ we are certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to brekky in this neck of the woods.
Last week, we put it to you, dear reader, to tell us who served up the most scrumptious breakfasts in Newcastle.
Without any further ado, the winner, according to you, is…..
1. Table 1 Espresso
89 – 93 City Road, Merewether AND 2/450 The Esplanade, Warners Bay
There was no shortage of love on our poll for Table 1 – at both locations.
Offering breakfast fare all day, Table 1’s menu runs the full gamut of morning treats.
From classics such as Eggs Benedict, omelettes and bruschetta, Table 1 also offers up such delectable options as Persian poached eggs, Moroccan scrambled eggs and bircher muesli and superbowls for the health conscious.

2. Mockingbird Cafe
131 Beaumont St Hamilton
Taking pride of place on Hamilton’s Beaumont Street, Mockingbird Cafe was also on the minds of a lot of readers when thinking about great breakfasts.
The cafe’s hearty “Mockingbird breakfast” replete with eggs your way, bacon, chorizo, a house-made hash brown, portobello mushrooms, tomato relish, and toasty sourdough is an absolute morning delight.
The vegetarian breakfast, with poached eggs, sauteed kale, almond hummus, fried cauliflower, pomegranate, and puffed rice has to be tasted to be believed.
Add to that a breakfast menu that leaves no stone unturned (from red velvet pancakes to vegan black rice porridge) and it makes sense why Mockingbird made this list.
Check out the menu here.
3. Three Monkeys
131 Darby St Cooks Hill
From the simple yet flavourful acai bowl and muesli to the more robust offerings such as the ‘Monkey Fry’ or ‘Vege Monkey’ Three Monkeys definitely has you covered when it comes to the most important meal of the day.
Three Monkeys even goes a touch old school with a Bubble n Squeak featuring butternut pumpkin, potato, corn, smoked bacon, spinach, and paprika aoli.
Another sure-fire winner here is the Brekky Fusion Bowl – a glorious concoction featuring deep-fried tofu, fried egg, kimchi, wasabi, avocado mousse, cabbage, coriander, pickled ginger, mint, broccolini, fried onion, chili soy glaze, and black rice. Phew.
Enough monkeying about, check them out here.
4. East End Hub
3/3 King St, Newcastle
Located just a stone’s trow away from our glorious coastline, East end Hub is a great place to while away a few morning hours while soaking up some great Newy atmosphere.
When it comes to the food, these guys are no slouches, either, serving up a simple breakfast menu that lets the flavours do the talking.
While carnivore and veggo ‘fry ups’ are high on the agenda, this eatery also revels in such delights as ricotta pancakes with Canadian maple, banana and praline butter.
They’ve even got a dedicated kids’ breakfast menu, making East End Hub an ideal spot for the whole brood.
