A Novocastrian who has touched the hearts of many is going through a tough time and, as Newcastle people do, her friends and family are holding a special event to support her.

Leeanne Symes is Hunter-born and bred. She has worked at numerous venues around the city including the Hotel CBD, one of the most popular venues during the late 90s and early 2000โ€™s. If you bought a drink from any of these establishments, it could well have been Leeanne who served you, with her bright smile and cheerful character.

Leeanne is also a doyen at Newcastle Racecourse, known for her fashion flair and bubbly outlook, always adding joy and a sense of fun to the day out at the races.

But things have been less than ideal over the last few years.

After a shock diagnosis with breast cancer, Leeanne endured two rounds of surgery (including a mastectomy), chemotherapy and a month of radiation. Then came five years of daily doses of drugs to stop the cancerโ€™s return. Things were looking good when, just before Christmas, Leanne had a biopsy done and a few days later she received the dreaded news that, not only had the cancer returned, it was far more aggressive and combative.

Leeanne’s resilience post-mastectomy surgery is truly inspirational, showcasing her vibrant spirit and unwavering determination to overcome this challenge. Despite her own situation, Leeanne volunteered for the Pink Army and the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF).

With her partner Jez and son Flynn, Leeanneโ€™s family and friends have united to help raise funds to cover medical costs and keeping some sense of normality within the family.

A special event will be held at 5 Sawyers on Sunday, 17 March from 2pm till 6pm to raise money to help Leeanne.

The event will be hosted by Timberlina and will include an array of cocktails, canapes and entertainment.

Also, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, there will be a Mega Prize Draw with premium prizes, as well as a silent auction during the event.

Organisers are looking forward to Leeanneโ€™s many friends turning up and supporting this special event to help this wonderful Novocastrian in need.

Tickets are on sale now via trybooking.com.
