THE CREMA OF THE CROP: Where to get the best coffee in Newcastle…as voted by YOU

There’s no denying that us Novocastrians love our coffee. While we may’ve once been satisfied with a cup of International Roast, our palates have matured when it comes to the humble little bean.

From cold brew to cappuccino, from macchiato to mochachino, it seems that our fair city may cease to function of its residents were unable to get their daily fix.

This hypothesis is bolstered by the amount of chatter generated when we asked you, dear readers, where in Newcastle served the best cup.

We were literally inundated with suggestions, with more than 60 coffee houses nominated.

So, without further ado, the number one slot goes to…

1. Main Coffee Co

2/686 Main Road, Edgeworth

This one came as a little bit of a surprise to us here at Newcastle Live largely because we had never heard about this little gem.

However, it seems that we are in the minority with the cafe nabbing an impressive 57 votes.

The cafe serves beans from Crema Coffee, locally roasted in Newcastle and they promise the blend is “as smooth as butter with a punchy fruit flavour”.

Their website states that “coffee should be enjoyed slowly now served slowly,” which gives the impression you will get your brew in a New York minute at Main Coffee Co.

2. Espresso Macchina

7 Throsby Street, Wickham

This funky little space in Wickham also generated a fair amount of love and it’s not hard to see why.

If you’re looking to lay your taste buds on an eclectic range of rare beans and creative concoctions like the butterscotch affogato, then you should make a beeline for Espresso Macchina.

As one fan commented on the cafe’s Facebook page: “the Baristas really know their art / science. The state of the art technology paired with the Baristas skills is so impressive.”

3. The Oily May Espresso Bar

223 Maitland Road, Mayfield

The Oily May is a must stop on any coffee aficionado’s “to do” list first and foremost for their on point brews and their super friendly service.

if you’re looking for a cruisy atmosphere in which to enjoy your coffee, then you need to check out The Oily May.

Oh and there is a bus stop right out the front, so you can enjoy your coffee sojourn without the hassle of parking.

Check them out.

4. Side Pocket Espresso

9/286-292 Maitland Road, Mayfield

It appears that Mayfield is making quite a name for itself on the local coffee scene with two cafes in this list coming from the 2304 postcode.

Having visited this cafe on a number of occasions, we can whole heartedly attest to the quality and full-bodied flavour these guys can pack into a cup.

In our experience, the staff are always super friendly and the service is always lightning fast – two factors that are almost important as the coffee itself.

Check them out here.

5. Xtraction Espresso

2/38 Bolton Street, Newcastle

Given the amount of quality coffee purveyors in Newcastle, we were also a little surprised that only one CBD cafe made the top five.

Another, outlet that has exceptional service, Xtraction doesn’t need any extra bells and whistles to make its point – it is all about the coffee.

Their double shot espresso is the absolute truth. Preach!
