Sunrise or Sunset? That’s the question being asked of Newcastle’s cigarette smokers. The Newcastle City Council has installed a ballot box-style cigarette bin asking smokers to cast their vote with a butt, to foster responsible waste disposal behaviour as part of Keep Australia Beautiful Week 2016.
The novel ashtray encourages users to vote on a certain topic or issue by choosing one of two receptacles to dispose of their cigarette, creating a public opinion poll that has genuine community benefits.
Keep Australia Beautiful and NCC are trialing the bin located in the lunch and recreational space at 666 Hunter Street for around six weeks.
The first question polarising smokers is: “Which do you prefer – sunrise or sunset?”
“We want everyone to do the right thing in Newcastle and this is a great way to get smokers on board,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.
“Cigarette butts get washed into storm water drains when they’re thrown away and end up in waterways.
“We hope that by engaging smokers in a fun way we will raise awareness of local litter issues and encourage them to responsibly dispose of their stubs.”
Questions will range from topics about litter to local issues, and will be changed regularly to maintain engagement with the public.
