2020 has been a challenging year for so many of us and with the possibility of unemployment and homelessness rates rising, for some Newcastle locals, it may get worse before it gets better.
In an effort to assist some of the most vulnerable in our community Soul Cafe, a fully community-funded organisation, has recently launched its 2020 Christmas Appeal.
And if you can spare the cost of adding a few extra items onto your weekly shopping list you can help them greatly.
Soul Cafe was established in August 2003 with the aim of offering hot meals and support free of charge to the highly disadvantaged of the Newcastle region.
Every week the organisation, and its volunteers, provide hundreds of free sit down and take away meals to guests that are dealing with issues of homelessness, drug or alcohol addiction, crime or violence, poverty, separation, mental health or illness concerns and accommodation needs.
A key component of the Soul Cafe Christmas Appeal is the Holiday Hamper drive. The Soul Cafe has put together a shopping list of non-perishable food and beverage products, including soup and bottled water, and toiletries items – you can view the list here.
And if you are able, they ask you to purchase these items, put them together in a reusable shopping bag and drop them to Soul Cafe between Monday – Thursday, 8am – 2pm before December 16, 2020.
The hampers will then be handed out to as many families in need as possible between Boxing Day and January 4, 2021.
Soul Cafe is located on the 2nd Floor, Cnr Hunter & Watt Streets Newcastle NSW 2300 and you can find out more about their services and what they do for people in need here.
