The Song Cover Challenge is a Newcastle based Facebook competition that challenges people to learn new songs, record them and make videos. Every 2nd Monday at 6pm a themed round is put up, and six people enter to put their own spin on some famous songs. The series has already enjoyed 19 excellent rounds that you can explore here.
Round 19’s theme is Natural Bodies Of Water, and was chosen by Round 16 Winner, Rose & The Sea. Round 19 is dedicated to songs that were inspired by oceans, rivers, and everything in between. It’s fitting that Rose & The Sea hail from Newcastle; which itself is inspired by the beaches and lakes that surround it.
Below we have all six entries for Round 19 of the Song Cover Challenge. You can vote for your favourite here.
Nick Allan – Bridge Over Troubled Water [Simon & Garfunkel]
“It’s been six months since I last entered the comp, but this could very well be my favourite song of all time, so I had no problems getting motivated to have another crack at the SCC. It has a bit of a similar vibe to the Elvis Presley version with the first verse inspired by Johnny Cash’s version. I wanted to collaborate heavily on this and ended up with contributions from Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and even London! A big thank you to Tim in the U.K. for his vocals and guitar work, Dave for his trombone and vocals, Alex for stepping in last minute to provide some bass, Ryan for the bit of harmonica, Emily for triangle, and Chris for sacrificing his Sunday to go film the video with me. I hope people enjoy it!”
Rose & The Sea – Waterfalls [TLC]
“We had this idea to do it like Jimmy Fallon and The Roots…kinda got there…yeah.”
Paul Pickles – (He’ll Never Be An) Old Man River [TISM]
“With the song being so bare bones it gave me a lot of room to work with which was cool. I just gave it my usual treatment and made it weird and sad”
My Friend Rupert – Rivers And Roads [The Head & The Heart]
“Admittedly we had both never heard this song before being assigned the cover, but as soon as we had a listen we loved the whole folky sound and decided to strip it back to just keys and vocals and focus on the lyrics. The most challenging part of this for us was learning how to use a go pro, we only managed to get one take that didn’t have skips and loud noises in it!”
Jasmine – Rivers Of Dreams [Billy Joel]
“I’d never heard The River Of Dreams before… on first impression, I loved the soulfulness of the song, especially the gospel back-up vocals, and thought it might lend itself to an upbeat soul version. I’m very thankful for the talented team of musicians who rocked it out in one lounge-room jam session with me – fun and sweaty work!”
