Song Cover Challenge: Round 17

The Song Cover Challenge is a Newcastle based Facebook competition that challenges people to learn new songs, record them and make videos. Every 2nd Monday at 6pm a themed round is put up, and six people enter to put their own spin on some famous songs. The series has already enjoyed 16 excellent rounds that you can explore here.

Round 17’s theme is Prince, and was chosen by Round 14 Winner, Adam. Round 17 is dedicated to The Artist Formerly Known As Prince; the icon of the music industry that tragically passed away earlier in the year.

Below we have all six entries for Round 16 of the Song Cover Challenge. You can vote for your favourite here.

Sam Cupitt – Kiss

“Was petrified of this round at first but it turns out once you take all the squeals out you can bash out the music pretty easy. Though I forgot to put the squeals back in. Had no ideas for the video so my strange body movements and sing face will suffice. Game. Blouses.”

Sally Spicer – Nothing Compares 2 U

“It was a pretty daunting task at first to record such an emotional song. But then they stopped selling sour skittles and my video pretty much filmed itself. Damnit Jacinta.”

Manic Pixie Dream Gorilla – Little Red Corvette

“Pete knows a lot about cars, so when he randomly started telling me facts about corvette’s I knew I had struck gold. But when I tried to record a pop punk version of my song, I realised my phone’s semi broken microphone probs wasn’t gonna cut it. Anyway, here’s wonderwall.”

Senem Döner – Purple Rain

“This was very difficult for me but I’m glad I gave it go. At least Adam made an idiot out of himself.”

Jesse Hunter – When Doves Cry

“This was such a fun song to cover since the original is mostly just a strong vocal line; there was so much I could do with it. A couple of beers and some good mates coupled with generous amounts of smoke (to mask my questionable dancing) helped to polish off the video!”

Alexander Wilhelm – Darlin’ Nikki

“I’ve been listening to a lot of The White Stripes and decided to make this into a Prince meets Jack White on piano thing, then just make with the guitar noise every now and then. As for the video… Well I really needed to bring in my washing.”
