After 18 months of uncertainty, the Newkulele Festival have announced they will return to Newcastle City Hall in 2022!
It’s been four year’s since the festival organisers brought international acts and players from across Australia to celebrate the sounds of the ukulele.
The biannual festival offers workshops, community group performances, school performances, markets, an open mic stage, and showcases two fabulous ticketed evening concerts.
The first Newkulele Festival was held under a circus tent at the Croatian Club in Wickham and featured performances from AJ Leonard and Jenny Rowlands, Bosko and Honey, and Azo Bell. About 2000 people attended the first festival and its success saw the 2014 event move to The Newcastle Jockey Club which could accommodate a larger crowd.
Since their humble beginnings, festival organisers have grown the event to a position where some of the biggest names in the ukulele community, including Manitoba Hal, Honoka & Azita and Ukulele Death Squad have all played not the festival’s stage.
The 2022 Newkulele festival will be held from the 9th until the 11th of September at Newcastle City Hall. More information, including lineup, will be announced soon.
