REVIEW: Sharp-witted comedian Wanda Sykes is back with new Netflix special

It’s been three years since Wanda Sykes last took to the stage as a stand-up comedian. And surprisingly, her new show Wanda Sykes: Not Normal, is about to screen on Netflix.

Why is this surprising?

Well, early last year, she took the streaming behemoth to task for apparent gender and racial bias when fellow comedian Mo’Nique was offered significantly less than Dave Chapelle for a comedy special.

And rightly so.

So, what’s changed now?

According to a recent interview Sykes did with Variety, they had the best offer. Sykes told the reporter,

“They know what their numbers are, but they don’t tell you so I’m not worried about people having to tune in at a certain time. People can watch it whenever they want to watch it, so you get that long life of the special instead of after the first two weeks then it goes away. You always get people who are just now finding it. That was really appealing.”

Logic, business brain and good ole’ common sense. You can’t argue with that.

Sykes has become a familiar face in movies and TV shows, perhaps best known for her role as Daphne Lido in the critically acclaimed Black-ish.

As for the special itself, Sykes is as hilarious as always. This time around, she has a lot to say about Trump. A whole lot. As a black woman married to a white French woman and raising two white kids, she has an awful lot to say about Trump and his politics.

She also has a lot to say about aging, marriage, kids, head lice, her pot belly — whom she affectionately refers to as Estelle — and life in general.

Sykes is as sharp tongued as she is adorable, which is an almost irresistible combination, and she is in fine form in this just-over-an-hour long comedy special.

If you like clever women, sharp comedy and just laughing at everyday things we can all relate too, you will want to watch Wanda Sykes: Not Normal tonight!
