Like us, our mate Laura Kebby is a big fan of what local singer songwriter, Jason Lowe is up to at the moment. She dropped into 5 Sawyers on Darby Street last night to catch a few sets from this exciting Novocastrian artist.
In a world so chaotic and complicated, Iโve learned to savour key moments of tranquility. I had one of those rare moments on Sunday evening at 5 Sawyers when I had the privilege of listening to the wonderful Jason Lowe. Iโve seen Jason perform many times, and his music will always be something that is guaranteed to pull on my heart strings, fill my head with images of wonder, and of course, invoke a Dylan-esque desire for all things free spirited. Whilst the boutique bar was packed with the regular Sunday session crowd, divided equally between those privileged enough to ignore the traditional idea of the week โendโ and those young enough not to care, a softly spoken Jason unpacked his slide guitar and began to play. Then it happened. Amongst the noise, the chaos, disputes over shouts and tinder horror stories, the world stopped. I was suddenly a million miles away and slowly forgetting the impeding doom of Monday morning. Jasonโs voice is so light and even borderline mysterious at times, he treated the crowd to a generous mix of covers and original tunes. Beautiful guitar driven melodies laced with heart wrenching lyrics made for a truly wonderful performance despite the acoustics.
Despite the typical approach of simply favouring a live musician over a generic track for ambiance and of course the essential element of hipster cool, 5 Sawyers gave a few dedicated punters an alternative opportunity. A chance to abandon generic conversation in favour of a front row seat to a wonderfully enthralling folk artist to really finish the week on a genuine high note. I cannot recommend catching the true talent that is Jason Lowe and his many guitars highly enough. Drop everything and experience this phenomenal young artist single handedly hold your heart in the palm of his hand.
Jason is currently in the process of crowd funding his new album which creatively, has been 4 years in the making. As a fan of his earlier work, hearing Jason describe his latest endeavour as โhis best work to dateโ I cannot wait to see the finished product. You can find Jasonโs music here: https://jasonlowe.bandcamp.com and most importantly you can help make his new album possible by contributing here: https://pozible.com/project/jason-lowe-2016-album
With the weather getting warmer, Iโd love to knowโฆ Whereโs your favourite live music venue that helps to ease the pain of the ever contagious and inevitable Monday-itus?

ABOUT LAURA
Iโm Laura, and writing about our wonderful city is something I am oh so passionate about. You can find me tucked away in the corner of your local open mic night, taking in the sights with a local artist flowing through my headphones, or hanging out in the front row of your first gig where youโre debating whether the staff count as crowd members. Built on coffee, live music and punk nostalgia, I write about talented people doing talented things.
