She was the iconic singer, actress and animal activist who sadly passed away in May this year at the ripe old age of 97.
And Doris Day’s legacy will live on thanks to Australian country star Melinda Schneider, who will be bringing a special Doris Day tribute show A Farewell To Doris to Wests New Lambton this week.
“A Farewell to Doris is the celebration of a wonderful life – the life of Doris Day,” Melinda told Newcastle Live.
“We lost Doris just a few months ago at the age of 97 years young. She’s been such an inspiration to me and I thought she would make 100 because she’s outlived everybody – all four of her husbands and all of her co-stars.
“But what amazing innings she had and left behind a lot of happy fans.”
Given Doris’ extraordinary output (she recorded more than 650 songs throughout her stellar career) writing a set for such a show can prove difficult, but added that people ould expect all of those quintessential Doris songs like Que Sera Sera, Sentimental Journey, and Everybody Loves a Lover.
Five questions with Melinda Schneider
“It’s always hard to choose the songs for a show like this because she did record over 600 songs. But I’ve pretty much stuck to her biggest hits, some of my favourite songs, but they’re all songs that people know. so many people sing along and that makes me so happy.
“It’s all about taking the audience on a trip back to more innocent times…when life was a lot more simple in many ways. I don’t know that it was better but it was certainly more simple.”
Melinda, who first started performing at the tender age of three and made her recording debut at age eight on the mother Mary Schneider’s album The Magic of Yodeling at age eight, is certainly no stranger to the stage.
Across eight studio albums, Melinda has become one of the most loved country stars in the biz. And she’s got no plans to start slowing down yet.
“I’m touring this show regionally, up until March 2020,” Melinda said.
“But, I’m also writing a musical this year all about my life and I’m also recording a new album, so lots of new original music coming from me.
It’s been a while. It’s been ten years since my last original album so I’m really excited to get some new songs out there.”
