Birdcage On Air is a new video and podcast series celebrating our love of music. And given our current predicament, it couldn’t have landed at a better time.
In its first three episodes, the series has featured some of the best producers, beatmakers and DJs Newcastle has to offer. The man behind the initiative, local record slinger Perry Carter, says he wanted to create a platform for artists in Newcastle to showcase their talents and projects.
“There are tons of cool people doing really cool things in Newcastle. So far, I’ve been asking people I know who are producing original music, promoting unique events or are genuinely evolving the Newcastle music community to get involved,” Perry told Newcastle Live.
“Now I’ve got a calendar that’s filling up with everything from trance DJs to Jazz-fusion bands. But I’m super easy to reach via the Birdcage On Air Facebook or Instagram pages if you want to get involved.”
The latest video in the series sees local duo Keys And Beats perform a completely improvised set recorded live from the Birdcage On Air performance space.
“This set was actually the first time Jesse and I were able to jam in a while, but it warmed up super quick,” Keys And Beats’ Huw Jones said.
“We basically start with an aesthetic. Down tempo lo-fi, or house or something like that. Then we just kind of start. Jesse is such a great musician and has such amazing sensibilities for song,” Huw continues.
“Jesse starts playing and I start grabbing snippets of what is playing that we start layering together. At the same time I am programming rhythms/ beats and also trying to work in some other textural parts. I use records for a vocal element, I think it adds an earthiness to it and audiences seem to connect easier with verbal language.”
The name for the series, Perry tells us, comes from a resident of his home studio.
“Our pet bird, Captain FOMO lives in my home studio. I’ve always just referred to that space as “The Birdcage”. I’m sure Captain appreciates the gesture” Perry tells us.
With everything that’s going on in the world, with the COVID-19 pandemic on everyone’s mind, Perry hopes the series will provide a light in some dark times.
“Music has always been able to get people out the dark days. Bob Marley has that quote “when the music hits you, you feel no pain” and I think it’s a great time to get away from social media and listen to an album cover to cover. Put on a concert and dance around your living room.”
“I’m personally using this time off to actually enjoy music again. I’m listening and buying stuff exclusively for my own pleasure and not having to think about whether it’s appropriate for this venue or that venue. As shitty as it is to not be earning cash, I’m using this as an opportunity to hop off the hamster wheel of weekly gigs and to make myself better,” Perry concludes.
