OUT AND PROUD: Newcastle Pride Festival to kick off with a bang this weekend!

After a hugely successful inaugural hit-out in 2018, the Newcastle Pride Festival is back again this weekend for what promises to be an even bigger celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture!

“Newcastle Pride Festival has grown so much in just one year,” Newcastle pride president Lee-Anne McDougall said.

“We have an amazing committee who have all given up so much of their own time to bring the community an amazing festival. The 2019 festival is gearing up to be something special with some awesome events that everyone can enjoy!”

The festivities will kick off on Friday night at Newcastle City Hall with Twisted Cabaret – a tantalising smorgasbord of camp burlesque, performance art, and elevated drag.

Hosted by former Novocastrian queer comedic singing sensation Denise Hanlon, the night will feature award-winning drag divas Drags To bitches, the camp and sexy Leather Lungs, the burlesque of Glitta Supernova and circus-inspired performance art with Simon Jeffory.

The party will then roll on to Foreshore Park on Saturday 24 August for the Newcastle Pride Fair Day.

The biggest event on the program, the free-family-friendly fair day is chock-full of fun including kids’ activities, meetup tents, drag shows, live music, comedy, and retail stalls.

Oh, and the popular Doggywood parade will be making a welcome return for 2019!

After the sun sets on the Fair Day, two massive dance parties will take over the Cambridge Hotel – Heaven and Hell and Return To Pipers.

Heaven and Hell will be a night of light and darkness with some of the best DJs on the scene pumping out an infectious mix of pop, house, disco and high-energy beats.

Return To Pipers meanwhile will be an explosion of ’90s glitz and glamour taking us back to the heady days of one of Newcastle’s most iconic gay venues, Pipers.

Dance to Bananarama, Rick Astley, Duran Duran and Culture Club. All your favourite original showgirls and entertainers will be there with those classic show numbers including Trudy Burnett, Jason, Nellie, Glenda Jackson, Angela Andrews, Chanel Detroit and Marcia Monterey.

Special guests, the legendary Verity and the glamorous icon Penny Clifford will be back for one night only.
