Want to give something back this Christmas? Well, Lifeline in the Hunter and Central Coast needs your help.

The not-for-profit organisation is looking for empathetic people to volunteer its 13 11 14 crisis support line.

Local executive director Rob Sams said that nationally, Lifeline expects to receive in excess of 2000 calls each day over the holiday period.

“We know that for some, Christmas is a time of joy, but sadly for others, it is a time of pain, stress and of loneliness.

“Connecting with others is something that we crave as humans and our service is there for people who want to connect with others.โ€ He said.

Mr Sams added that there are currently 110 telephone crisis support volunteers in the Hunter and Central Coast, but more are needed.

“As a Lifeline telephone crisis supporter, you can help save lives, but you will also receive outstanding training that our volunteers report helps them in their own self-awareness and personal lives,” he said.

“We need people who are empathic, a good listener and willing to help others.

“We have people of all ages and from all walks of life volunteering with us.”

The 13 11 14 service operates 24 hours and can also be used by people who are worried about other people. Alternatively, people can try or try Lifeline’s new text service on 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm and midnight.ย

Mr Sams also suggested people check in on people they know whom they think may be in crisis. He stressed if someone is in immediate danger people should call 000.
