He’s the ex-pat Aussie hitmaker who proclaimed that cigarettes will kill you back in 1998.
And Ben Lee will be hitting Australian roads again in 2021 on his OMG! I’m Playing Gigs Again tour, which will see the one-time Noise Addict hit Lizotte’s this May
And it seems that love for the indie rocker is as strong as ever among Novocastrians with his show on Saturday 15 May selling out in mere nanoseconds.
Never fear, though because fans will still be able to get up close and personal with Ben as a second show, Sunday 16 May has been locked in.
Ben kicked off his career in the early ’90s with lo-fi Sydney punks Noise Addict, who were touted as the next big thing after turning the heads of such tastemakers as Sonic Youth and The Beastie Boys.
After a string of EPs and a long player Meet The Real You (as well as a 2009 album It Was Never About The Music with a new Noise Addict incarnation featuring Sebadoh’s Lou Barlow), Noise Addict came to a halt and Ben went off in search of a solo career.
It didn’t take him long to find it either, with his solo debut Grandpaw Would offering up a mellower more acoustic sound – a sound that Beastie Boys label Grand Royale touting as being “a meaty, beaty, swinging, ring-a tingling, hopping, popping section of tunes that represent all that’s about today’s pop scene.”
That album and it’s follow-up Something To Remember Me By achieved a modicum of success for Ben, it was 1998’s Breathing Tornadoes that saw the songwriter burst to national attention with the catchy-as-heck Cigarettes Will Kill You.
However it was 2005’s Awake Is The New Sleep featuring the singles Catch My Disease and Gamble Everything For Love that cemented Lee as a creative force to be reckoned with.
He has basically not stopped ever since, recording a slew of albums in the interim, including two collaborations with How I Met Your Mother star Josh Radnor and one with acclaimed US or Tom Robbins with B Is For Beer: The Musical.
2021 is shaping up to be another wild ride as Ben preps for the release of his forthcoming album featuring collaborations with Shamir, Christian Lee Huston, Money Mark, Sadie Dupuis and Zooey Deschanel.
