The turn of the millennium was a unique time in the modern musical landscape. With the emergence of the internet, new genres were being found and created every day.

The formula was simple, take a popular genre and give it a prefix to give the impression of freshness. Post-punk, alt-rock and of course NU-metal.

While post-punk stripped itself back to basics, nu-metal found its success by adding elements from other genres. Limp Bizkit added turntables from hip-hop, Korn brought phat basslines from funk and Slipknot incorporated emotive lyrics from the alternative scene. Nu-Metal had perfected its formula.

The imagery and fashion was no less eclectic with goth, metal, punk, skate and hip-hop all contributing to the aesthetic. This blend of sights and sounds captivated the millennium audience and is currently intriguing a new generation of headbangers.

The recent resurgence of nu-metal can be attributed to several factors. Artists such as Billie Eilish, Travis Scott and even Doja Cat have claimed to be fans of and inspired by nu-metal artists. Fashion runways have models sporting doggy-chained wallets, t-shirts adorned with tech-goth fonts and baggy jorts (jean shorts), all worn without irony.

Festivals such as Sick New World have sprung up paying direct homage to the forefathers of nu-metal by featuring bands like Korn, System of a Down and Papa Roach. While online, tiktok users are soundtracking their videos with songs from Deftones, Slipknot and Linkin Park. Spreading the nu-metal sound to fresh new ears.

Social and cultural factors have also played a role in nu-metal’s revival. The genre’s themes of personal struggle, emotional catharsis, and societal critique resonate with today’s generation facing its own set of challenges. As young people grapple with issues like mental health, identity, and social inequality, nu-metal provides a visceral outlet for self-expression.

The resurgence of nu-metal is a testament to the genre’s enduring appeal and adaptability. As it blends nostalgia with innovative sounds, nu-metal proves that it’s more than just a throwback trend. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or a curious newcomer, the revitalized nu-metal scene offers a powerful musical experience that is undeniably captivating.
