Newcastle Theatre Company will present Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 American musical, Merrily We Roll Along, as their first 2023 season offering this February.

The much-loved and award-winning musical is a classic Broadway fable about friendship, fame, and the high price of success.

Told in reverse, the production begins with three close friends at their lowest point. A composer, a lyricist and a writer jaded and unhappy despite their fame and wealth.

The story tracks back through their lives to end up 20 years earlier, at the very beginning, when their youth, talent and enthusiasm promise to change the world.

Long-term friends David Gray and Kieran Norman have joined forces as the creative powerhouse behind the production with David making his directorial debut, and Kieran taking the reins of musical director alongside the choreography of Jade Shearman.

The show also features three of the Hunterโ€™s leading young music theatre performers in Zac Smith, who recently appeared in Opera Hunterโ€™s The Last Five Years, Freddy Hellier who was in Metropolitan Playersโ€™ Jersey Boys, and Chiara Patalano who has degree in Music Theatre from the prestigious Australian Institute of Music.

Newcastle Theatre Company’s production of Merrily We Roll Along will play at the theatre in Lambton’s De Vitre Street from 4 until 18 February 2023. Tickets are on sale now at newcastletheatrecompany.com.au.
