No local public holiday for Newcastle Show

There will be no public holiday for Newcastle Show. The Show Association has made a decision not to proceed with a request for a local public holiday for Friday 4 March 2016. The decision has received praise from The Hunter Business Chamber.

“The Newcastle Regional Show is an iconic local event that has a long and proud history dating back to 1899. The Newcastle Regional Show has always enjoyed a strong appeal to a broad cross section of the community. However, we recognise that the cost of a Public Holiday to businesses is simply too much for them to bear,” said Brett Gleeson, President, Newcastle Show Association .

“We want to deliver a Show that has the support of all the community and is enjoyed by all the community. So we hope that in making this decision which will benefit all businesses in Newcastle and lake Macquarie, the business community will provide increased support for the Newcastle Regional Show”.

In 2015 the show saw over 50,000 people through the gates.

What do you think? Should Novocastrians have a public holiday for the regional show? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
