No fireworks, but Newcastle will still POP with fun this NYE!

Even though there will be no fireworks billowing out in incandescent plumes over the Newcastle skyline this New Year’s Eve, Novocastrians can still celebrate the end of 2020 in style.

This year, the focus is on connecting community safely with family-friendly picnics in the park, pool parties and food-focused market stalls on offer around the city on Thursday 31 December and Friday 1 January.

“In a year that’s been very different from what anyone would have expected, we’ve decided to do things a little differently when it comes to our New Year’s celebrations,” Deputy Mayor Declan Clausen said.

“After making the difficult decision to cancel our traditional fireworks event this year, we’ve been working on ways to bring the party to the people and allow Novocastrians to celebrate closer to home.”

NYE 2020 will be a Novocastrian epicurean’s delight with food markets running at Lambton Park and Dixon Park from 3pm to 8pm, giving you ample time to stock up for a family-friendly picnic in the park to remember.

Both markets will also feature roving entertainers and children’s activities.

The festival of feasting will continue into 2021 with food markets tempting taste buds at Richley Reserve from 10am to 4pm on New Year’s Day. The markets will also feature roving entertainers, kid’s activities and a sensory zone for people with disabilities and their families.

If you’re looking to make a splash in 2021, Beresfield, Mayfield, Stockton and Wallsend pools have got you covered with activations featuring water-based inflatables, food trucks and roving entertainers from 10am to 4pm on New Year’s Day.

“2020 has been a year like no other, but what it has shown above all is our community’s ability to work together for the benefit of all,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

“The city deserves the chance to celebrate what we have achieved together this year and everything we’re looking forward to in 2021.”

All things being equal, it is expected the Foreshore fireworks celebration will return in 2021.
