Magpie Diaries have unveiled their powerful new single, History, a track that delves into the importance of understanding Australia’s past to shape a better future.

Recorded at the Tractor Shed studio in Dashville on the unceded lands of Wonnarua country, the song is a poignant reflection on the narratives that have been passed down through generations and the responsibility to seek out the full truth.

Opening with a haunting fiddle line and tenderly played acoustic guitar, History immediately sets a somber yet compelling tone. The lyrics navigate through personal revelations and broader historical themes, culminating in a rousing chorus that poses the question, “Do you know your history?”

Led by husband-and-wife duo Magpie Johnston and Jess Hartigan, Magpie Diaries continues to refine their signature soul-country sound. The song’s evocative storytelling is complemented by a visualiser featuring archival footage spanning two centuries, sourced from the National Archive.

“As a child life was great, but I wasn’t really taught the true history of Australia, it was more about the colonial explorers, bushrangers and budgies” Magpie said.

“It wasn’t until later in my twenties and thirties that I began to seek out a deeper understanding of our nation’s true history. And that knowledge had a profound impact on me as an individual born in this country.”

Featuring contributions from an ensemble of talented musicians, including Todd Johnston on bass, Chris Dale on piano and electric guitar, Gleny Rae on fiddle, and Melody Pool on backing vocals, History showcases the band’s rich instrumentation and heartfelt harmonies.

As Magpie Diaries gear up for their sophomore album release later this year, History sets the tone for what’s to come—an introspective yet resonant collection of songs that encourage listeners to reflect, learn, and move forward with awareness. The single is available now on all streaming platforms, Bandcamp and is now in rotation on our stream.
