Make Music Day strikes a chord in Newcastle this June, with locals encouraged to join a global celebration of music-making.
From community choirs and school bands to solo performers, jam sessions and street concerts, Make Music Day is inviting Novocastrians to get involved in a worldwide event that turns public spaces into stages and celebrates the simple joy of making music.
The annual initiative takes place in more than 120 countries and thousands of cities, bringing people together through music regardless of age, experience or genre.
Originally launched in France in 1982 as Fête de la Musique, the event has grown into a global movement that encourages everyone to participate.
Whether it’s picking up an instrument, singing with friends, hosting a community performance or simply enjoying live music in a local venue, the focus is on participation rather than perfection.
Organisers are hoping to see more communities across Australia embrace the event in 2026, highlighting the social, cultural and wellbeing benefits that come from making music.
Much like community sport, music offers opportunities to connect with others, build confidence, express creativity and strengthen local communities.
Across the country, councils, venues, schools, community groups and musicians are already planning free events, performances and workshops.
Cities such as Adelaide and Moreton Bay have embraced the initiative with large-scale programs, while organisers are encouraging Newcastle groups, businesses and performers to create their own events and help put the city on the map.
The celebration is open to everyone, from seasoned musicians and emerging artists to complete beginners looking to share a song or join a jam. The goal is simple: fill communities with music and remind people that music belongs to everyone.
