Young People’s Theatre is set to serve up a family favourite when its talented cast of performers presents Shrek The Musical Jr, a joyful reimagining of the beloved DreamWorks film.
Featuring a cast of young performers from Years 3 to 13, the production follows Shrek’s unlikely quest to rescue Princess Fiona, only to discover that friendship, love and true acceptance often come from the most unexpected places.
Along the way, audiences will meet a colourful lineup of fairytale misfits, including Donkey and a chorus of creatures who celebrate the power of being different.
The creative team behind the show has embraced the story’s iconic themes of individuality and belonging. With storybook-inspired sets and costumes, the production highlights the idea that everyone can write their own tale and make it as big, bright and bold as they dream.
For many cast members, Shrek’s message of self-love remains a timeless reminder that being unique is something to celebrate.
“Shrek The Musical Jr is a beautiful story about finding your place in the world and finding yourself and love in the process.” Co-director Hannah-Grace Richens said.
“To quote Shrek, ‘Fairytales should really be updated’, and through the use of storybook pages in both set and costume, we hope to show our audiences that you can write your own story and make it as big, bright and beautiful as your heart desires.”
Families can also look forward to energetic musical numbers, vibrant choreography and plenty of classic moments from the film brought to life on stage. With its playful spirit and uplifting message, Shrek The Musical Jr is designed to delight younger audiences while giving parents and carers a healthy dose of nostalgia.
Shrek The Musical Jr runs from 13 April to 23 May at Young People’s Theatre Hamilton. Tickets are $25 and available via the YPT website or by calling the box office on 4961 4895.
