NEW TUNES: Anousha Victoire takes lighthearted approach to heartbreak on new single

Following on from her beautifully lilting track Precious Things To Me, which dropped in February, Anousha Victoire is back with another taste from her soon-to-be-released album.

The Newcastle songwriter will release the decidedly upbeat and light-hearted Rather Be Your Lover (Than Your Wife) on Friday 1 May.

Taking a bit more of a honky-tonk approach this time around, Anousha enlisted the stellar bluegrass talents of fellow Novocastrians Gleny Rae and Robbie Long (who also produced the single at his Funky Lizard Studios) who provide much sparkle on fiddle and mandolin respectively and Skye Harrison on backing vocals.

I was involved in a cabaret show with two other singer-songwriters themed around heartbreak, called Handle With Care. It was performed as part of Brisbane’s Anywhere Festival,” Anousha explained.

“As we collected material for the show we realised that our heartbreak songs were on the dreary and melancholy side, which doesn’t really work in a cabaret show. So I wrote this song – a light-hearted look at a relationship gone wrong, that hopefully, anyone who has had to get through the ups and downs of a domestic relationship will relate to in some way.”

Anousha’s duo of 2020 singles represents a welcome return to the studio after a decade away from recording and releasing new music.

After a string of EPs – Off My Skin, Anousha Victoire Live, and Icarus in the early noughties, Anousha stepped back from songwriting to focus on her career and musical theatre.

But luckily for us, she has been hunkered down in the studio with Robbie Long, working on a new album that will include a slew of new tracks as well as new arrangements of fan favourites.

Anousha Victoire’s I Would Rather Be Your Lover (Than Your Wife) will be available to stream and download on Friday 1 May
