Double header for Newcastle Roller Derby League’s annual pride round

The Fort Smashleys and the Bogey Rollers face off during Newcastle Roller Derby League’s annual pride round.

As the reigning champions in 2019, the Fort Smashleys are searching for their second win of the 2022 season.

Local drag performer Foxxe Faux will also make an appearance at the event with stalls, best-dressed prizes and free face painting on offer to celebrate the special round.

“We really go all out for our pride round,” league president Zoe Llewellyn (aka Moxie Monoxide) said.

“There has always been significant overlap between the roller derby and queer communities and the pride round is our chance to celebrate that.”

The league will also join forces with Newcastle Junior Roller Derby for the round.

Junior teams, the Rainbows and the Unicorns will face off in a bout before adult home teams hit the track.

“We are also so excited to be able to feature junior roller derby. These kids are amazing!” Zoe said.

The 2022 Newcastle Roller Derby League pride round is happening on Saturday 13 August at Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre in  Broadmeadow. Doors will open at 4:30 pm with the junior game starting at 5 pm and the adult game commencing at 7 pm. Tickets are available now from newcastlerollerderby.org.au.
