Newcastle Roller Derby community gears up for annual pride round

Newcastle’s vibrant Roller Derby community is once again gearing up for their annual pride event which is happening at the Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre later this month.

Local Roller Derby enthusiasts of all ages can expect an exciting day as the event features two thrilling games.

First up, the junior skaters will take the spotlight, showcasing their impressive talents and skills in a high-energy opening contest. These young athletes never fail to impress with their dedication and passion for the sport.

Following the junior game, the excitement will continue as two of the league’s popular home teams, the Harbour Hellcats and the Fort Smashleys, go head-to-head as part of the current competitive season.

The pride event will also feature an array of stalls, raffles, and family entertainment, making it a fantastic outing for everyone.

“We all look forward to our pride round so much, our juniors are especially excited,” league representative Zoe Llewellyn, who skates as Moxie Monoxide, said.

“We take so much joy in celebrating the diversity of our members and their families, and in showing up for the wider queer community.”

The 2023 Newcastle Roller Derby pride event is happening on Saturday, August 12 at the Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre in Broadmeadow. Tickets for the action-packed event are available now at newcastlerollerderby.org.au.
