It may’ve been a long time between drinks for Amy Vee with her debut album Fits and Starts dropping back in 2013, but that’s all about to change.
The Newcastle singer-songwriter will release her anticipated sophomore album, Same Skin this week and as a special treat, Amy will premiere the clip for her new track Paper and Wood on YouTube from 7:15pm on Tuesday night.
More than a year in the making, Same Skin features rich, dark-magic vocals weaving through a haunting folktronica landscape.
Amy’s signature ethereal vocal delivery again takes centre stage on the record, floating over a blissful mélange of acoustic and electronic instrumentation.
Amy said that much of the album was inspired by the ‘otherworldy’ while the title track dealt with feelings about maturing.
“There are several references to ghosts – things that haunt us or hold us back,” Amy said.
“The track Same Skin came from my feelings about age. That the exterior changes but the same feelings, beliefs, motivations, ideas, desires still exist.”
The album is a fitting follow-up to previously digital-only single releases Ten Years and Red Desert Heart, the former gaining Top 20 chart positions on iTunes and Triple J Unearthed, and the latter recorded as a result of Vee taking out the winning prize of the Studios 301 All Access Competition.
For Second Skin, Amy went down the crowdfunding route to see her dream realised and said it was a rewarding experience.
“The timing just felt right for an album, but I wasn’t sure how to approach it,” she said.
“As well as the digital singles, I had a collection of songs either part-recorded or ripe for the studio, so I thought I’d reach out to my friends and fans and see if together we could turn this into something special. They basically became my record label. I couldn’t have done this without them.”
Same Skin will be released on all platforms on Friday 26 July. Amy will premiere the clip for Paper and Wood at 7:15pm on Tuesday 23 July.
