Mullets of all shapes and sizes were on display at the Chelmsford Hotel in Kurri Kurri over the weekend as part of the most unique beauty contest in the world, Mulletfest.

Mulletfest creator, Laura Johnson and lead singer of Simply Bushed, Paul Grierson were on hand to keep the parade of mullets across the stage running smoothly and welcoming entries from a vast range of categories from babies to the over ’60s.

Belgian born man, Bavo Van Broeck took out the international category and fulfilled a lifelong dream in the process. Bavo made his way to Kurri with his 2 years old mulled for the contest from Perth via the opal mining town of White Cliffs and a quick stop at Kosciusko.

He rocked up to the event alone but quickly made friends which may have had a lot to do with his purple silk tracksuit, his sensational sunglasses, and his vibrant personality.

The rookie won over the judges with his stage presence, dance moves and a brave shoey straight from his work boot.

Club raffles were running throughout the day with an auction running at the end of the night raising funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

Mid-afternoon the first 100 clubs had been drawn and the winner, 5-year-old Winter, asked to donate the entire win back to the foundation. This generosity set off a chain reaction with people digging deep all day.

Mulletfest will continue its tour around the country, rolling into Soden’s Hotel in Albury on the weekend of 18 March before heading to venues in Rockhampton, Glenreagh, Logan Village, Alice Springs, Murrurundi and Dookie.

You can help raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation and take part in the Mulletfest phenomenon by picking up a 2022 Mulletfest Calendar. It is currently on sale at all Calendar Clubโ€™s pop-up outlets across Australia or can be purchased at Mulletfest events or online at mulletfest.com.au.
