Carrington-based workout emporium Millie Marshall Fitness has taken out top honours in our Best Of Newcastle gyms poll.
The Lott Street fitness centre evidently mobilised its fervent supporter base for the poll, taking 37.5 per cent of the vote (530 votes).
The rest of the hotly contested top five was rounded out by The Hunter Health Project (262 votes), The Self Care Sisterhood (237 votes), and Fresh (173 votes)
Owner Millie Marshall told Newcastle Live she was over the moon with the acknowledgement.
“It’s just incredible, I just can’t believe it. I’m very honoured,” she said.
“I’ve got the most incredible clients. You wouldn’t be anywhere without them and I am very lucky – I’m pretty much best friends with all of them now and I think that makes a big difference.”
Millie, who is just 20 years old, added that she started the business in an effort to mentor, motivate, and influence women across Newcastle.
“I’m only 20 but about six years ago I had anorexia and I guess I start in the fitness industry because I wanted to be the influence I never had growing up,” Millie said.
“I try to make it as encouraging, inviting and creating a supportive environment.”
While she likes to take a holistic approach to fitness, offering various cardio, HIIT (high-intensity interval training), strength and cross-fit style classes, Millie said that part of what she does is an attempt to dispel some myths around female fitness.
“I am very technique based,” she said.
“I do a lot of weight training because I am all about women empowerment and breaking the stigma of only men can lift weights and that being strong isn’t sexy or that weights are going to make you bulky.”
So what advice does Millie have for people thinking about dipping their toe into the fitness pool?
“Your future self will thank you for it,” she said. “The best investment you can ever make is in yourself because, at the end of the day, it’s always going to make you a better person, not only for yourself but for every single person around you.”
A hearty congratulations to Millie Marshall Fitness and the rest of the top five.
