Newcastle local, Brendan Smith has taken the lead at the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley. First day of play concluded here at the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic yesterday afternoon with the local boy leading after 18 holes, Shooting 63 and coming in 8 under par.
Leading the celebrity field is none other than House Husbands own Garry Sweet (+6) followed by former front row forward, Don McKinnon (+5), Champion wake boarder, Amber Wing (+4) and Packed to the Rafters star, Jacob Allan (+4). One of the many things that stand out at The Jack is that normal club dress rules don’t apply. There is always plenty of over the top outfits This year some of the highlights were Lincoln Lewis and golfer Skye Choueiri who were both in full body lycra, in the heat of the day yesterday. Now that is commitment.
As the sun went down all the guest headed to the Sponsors Dinner. Thankfully this year we were all treated to some stories from our patron, former PM Bob Hawke. Bob celebrated his 86 birthday last week and still played 18 holes in the sun, with a good cigar never too far out of reach. His opening line was about our host “When i think of an Australian, I think of Jack Newton. Courage unlimited and no bulls&%$”. Which I’m sure everyone in the room agrees with.
The Auction began which helps raise money for the Jack Newton Junior Golf and Diabetes research and prevention. All 16 items were sensation including trips to Europe, Vail and entry to some of the best Golf Club including Elanora Country Club and Ellerston Private Golf Club went under the hammer and several items fetched over $10,000 each in the room.
Vince Sorrenti took to the stage and had the crowd of over 300 in stitches and Wilbur Wilde, Lisa Edwards and our regular house band Rubber Bullet rounded off the entertainment for the night.
