LIVE ROTATION: Playlist & review July 2019

Welcome to the first of our new monthly playlist and music review, Live Rotation.

Each month the Newcastle Live crew will put together a list of our favourite new tunes with a few listening notes and links to listen and buy. Our focus will be on local and Australian releases with some international flavour thrown in occasionally to give everyone an idea of what we’ve been listening to in the office.

The Teskey Brothers
Run Home Slow

Run Home Slow is The Teskey’s sophomore offering and it’s delivering up the goods. The single, So Caught Up is one of the best recordings of 2019 and the album promises to be more killer than filler. It sounds like a band who’ve been jamming for the last 50 years working on new hooks in your living room. Every section could easily stand alone and it’s arguably one of the bands best vocal performances to date. Grab yourself a pair of sepia sunglasses and get into this

Adrian Eagle
Housing Trust

Good vibes and singable rhymes are what awaits you here. We are rusted on Adrian Eagle fans and this new release is more reason to sing his praises. The single is a welcomed addition to Eagle’s discography that also includes office favourites ’17 Again’ and ‘A.O.K’.

Jacob Ridgeway
Bullyman

The first time we heard Jacob Ridgeway sing was at a Uni Band comp a few years ago. We were immediately drawn to his soulful voice and honest delivery. This release is emotional and raw and explored Jacob’s Worimi and Gamilaroi heritage. The recording is spacious and wandering offering new surprises on each listen.

RAAVE TAPES
dancing because I’m sad

The latest single from RAAVE TAPES is here and it’s exactly what we all need from these newly appointed captains of Newcastle music. dancing because I’m sad is ironically a lot of fun and the guitar sounds explored new sonic realms of our MacBook speakers. This release is everything we’ve come to expect from the Novocastrian trio and once again cements their spot on the wall of the Newcastle Live pool room.

Georgina Grimshaw
Old Friend

Launched at The Royal Exchange last week, Newcastle singer-songwriter Georgina Grimshaw offers up her latest single, Old Friend. The song charts how Georgina felt shunned by friends after leaving her church. The experience made her rethink her approach to faith altogether and birthed the song you can check out above

Amy Vee
Paper and Wood

Taken from Amy’s latest album Same Skin, the single Paper & Wood is both well crafted and evocative. Amy’s voice, as always, is right on point here and we have to take out hats off to Gareth Hudson from Hazy Cosmic Jive Studio in Newcastle for the production which is both slick and layered. This is one of our best displaying the peak of their abilities… A must listen.
