A new country music event is taking over The Stag & Hunter Hotel in Mayfield this month.

The inaugural Mayfield Country Social will bring together alt-country sounds, DJs and good company for an inclusive night aimed at seasoned fans and the country-curious alike. It swaps the big hats and country clichรฉs for a night that draws on alt-country, folk, Americana and the grittier edges of the genre.

“We wanted to put on a night that leans into the broad church of country music,” organisers said.

“Thereโ€™s so much great music sitting around the edges of country, and you donโ€™t need a pair of cowboy boots to enjoy any of it. Thatโ€™s really where the โ€˜Less Boots, More Beersโ€™ thing came from.”

Alt-country goddess Katie Brianna leads the lineup with her amazing band made up of some of Newcastle’s most loved players. Melbourne singer-songwriter Clint Wilson will bring his band up the coast for the support slot and the night will open with a very special set from local songsmith and moustache aficionado, B.C. Murphy.

Beer Can DJs will be keeping things moving between the live sets, digging into a crate of bar room brawlers, dusty โ€™70s cuts, outlaw country grooves and honky tonk heaters, with later selections firmly aimed at the dancefloor.

“The โ€˜Socialโ€™ part of the name is really important to us,โ€ organisers said.

“We want it to feel welcoming, somewhere you can come with your mates, discover an artist you havenโ€™t heard before, have a beer, have a dance and be part of the night.

“Whether youโ€™re a country tragic or you wouldnโ€™t normally go anywhere near a country gig, youโ€™re invited.โ€

The inaugural Mayfield Country Social takes over the Stag & Hunter Hotel from 7:30 pm on Friday, 21 August. Entry is free. Click here to find out more.
