KARMA KAFE: Play inspired by Goldbergs goes UpStage

Karma Kafe, a play written by local Carl Caulfield, is one of four new and reimagined works that will take over The Playhouse as part of the 2024 UpStage program.

Inspired by Goldbergs on Darby Street, Karma Kafe will take audiences behind the scenes running café focusing on the stories of the staff and a diverse bunch of regulars.

The 2024 program will also feature an original production written by Ang Collins.

Called Blueberry Play, the one-woman show will delve into the highs and lows of adolescence in a small town, with a narrative packed with heart, humor, and poignant nostalgia.

“The fact all four of these productions have been written by Newcastle playwrights just shows the depth of talent we have in our city,” Civic Theatre Manager Leonie Wallace said.

“The Civic Theatre is aiming to build the capacity and exposure of our artists and to build Newcastle’s reputation as a cultural capital.

“It’s wonderful to see original and re-imagined productions form part of the UpStage at the Playhouse program.”

Romeo and Juliet will also undergo a transformation as part of UpStage. Charlotte De Wit and Pip Thoroughgood have adapted the timeless classic with the aim of bridging the gap between centuries, seamlessly intertwining the enduring beauty of Shakespearean prose through movement, dance, and physical theatre.

A Vanessa Bates play has also gotten the green light for the popular theatre series.

Her play, The Magic Hour is a dark comedy that promises an episodic reinterpretation of Grimm’s fairy tales, where Jack’s beanstalk sprouts in his parent’s backyard, and Rapunzel’s tower sits atop a housing commission high-rise.

Tickets for UpStage at the Playhouse will go on sale from 15 February 2024, with shows to run from August to November. visit civictheatrenewcastle/upstage to find out more.
