Like all the other legends of sound and screen that have left us recently, most of us were affected by the passing of Prince on April 21. A group of local musos will honour his legacy with a special concert at The Unorthodox Church Of Groove in Newcastle on Sunday June 12.
“A couple of days after the initial shock of Prince’s passing, our grief-stricken ringleader, local musician, Robbie Long sent an email around to see who might be interested in staging a tribute show to show our love and appreciation for the Purple One and his legacy. Without really knowing who and how many of us would care and/or respond, within days he had well and truly enough interest to put together a band worthy enough to tackle the Prince back catalogue” Newcastle based muso, Marissa Saroca tells us.
The show will feature some of Newcastle’s best and most prolific musicians including Marissa Saroca, Robbie Long, Dave Carter, Justin Ngariki, Dean Kyrwood, Ben Elliott, Jason Nelson, Sue Carson, Gareth Hudson, Luke Gaudry, Peter Gray, Matt Gaudry & Jason Bone.
This is one of those parties where musos who have never been on one stage together will be “funking it up for one” for a gig that’s less about work and more about passion.
“Personally, though I’ve looked up to these performers for YEARS I’ve never actually worked with most of them so this show is beyond exciting for so many reasons” Marissa says.
The venue, The Unorthodox Church Of Groove is dressed in an eclectic mix of vintage 70s finds and is about as charismatic as the man of honour himself.
“We’re excited to be able to introduce more locals to The Unorthodox Church of Groove. I honestly couldn’t think of a venue more perfect to stage the show”.
